Ahead of the Saturday’s gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly elections, the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON) and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has allayed fears being fueled by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the governing APC-led federal government had planned to unleash its might in some states in southern part of Nigeria.
Okechukwu, who spoke in a telephone interview with DAILY POST, on Friday evening, expressed confidence of credible and peaceful elections in the country, particularly in the south East zone on Saturday.
The VON DG advised that, “People should come and do their civic duties, because, the governor of a state is important in the management of the resources of each state of the federation.
“The numbers of House of Assembly members, whose election is also taking place on Saturday, are those who will make laws for each state of the federation. I advise every registered voter with the PVC to take the time and vote. Because, essence of voting in a democracy, is voting gives powers to the electorate to determine who governs them that is at the bedrock of democracy.”
He predicted that his party, the APC, would still maintain the majority in the number of states in the federation after the polls, asserting that APC was poised to ensure democratic dividends get to the doorsteps of the Nigeria masses.
“Before the election, we had 23 governors; we have won the presidential election. So, we cannot go below what we have. I don’t think so. We have not committed any offence that will make us (APC) recede.
“This is not a one party democracy, this is multi party democracy, so it is reasonable enough that other political parties will get one or two states, while we(APC) also maintain our majority in the Nigeria state”.
Asked to speak on the litigations against the eligibility of Senator Ayogu Eze, as governorship flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, Okechukwu, explained that, “The appeal court judgement of yesterday (Thursday) that pronounced Senator Ayogu Eze, as authentic governorship candidate of APC. And that the tomorrow’s election, is an election that is based on logo of the party.
“The ballot papers do not contain names. I will be surprised if APC logo is not in Enugu state ballot paper.”
