Do you want to buy a mobile phone and you wonder what the absolute best Android phone is right now? We have the answer and some alternatives too. Shopping for an Android phone can be hard work especially with the influx of these phones by different brands. It’s easy to get swayed by a pretty design or a convincing salesperson. I have my share of the experience in Ikeja Computer Village, one of the biggest mobile phone and computer market in the heart of Lagos, Nigeria.
Carriers might tempt you with an affordable 24-month payment plan. But before you make an ill-informed impulse buy, read up. From the bottomless pit of phone choices, we bring you our specification and prizes. All of the phones we’ve selected here have their own advantages, and we’ve laid them out as honestly as we can.
The Absolute Best – Samsung Galaxy S10
PRICE: (#271,540) $750
(Works on all four major networks) Samsung’s Galaxy S10 series really nails it. I really like almost every aspect of the phones (except Bixby), including the hole-punch in-display selfie camera and in-display “ultrasonic” fingerprint sensor on the S10 and S10 Plus. Samsung’s flagships have all the speed and camera capabilities you’d want in a 2019 phone, and the new One UI is pleasant to use and gets security updates monthly.
Other bonuses, like a MicroSD slot, wireless power sharing, and a headphone jack (yes!), help seal the deal and make the S10 our favorite phone of the year so far. There are three S10s: the regular phone, a larger S10 Plus, and the lower-cost S10E that cuts some corners.
Runner Up – Google Pixel 3
PRICE: (#289,280) $799
(Works on all four major networks) Google’s Pixel 3 and larger Pixel 3 XL are two of our favorite smartphones, period. The reasons are pretty simple. The Pixel 3 is as speedy as phones get and has an amazing camera that rivals the best of the best. Critically, Pixels receive security and software updates directly from Google. The updates are so fast and frequent that Pixel 3 owners were even treated to a post-launch camera upgrade called Night Sight, which gives it the highest-quality night shots of any phone we’ve used.
Best for the Least – OnePlus 6T
PRICE: (#198,770) $549
(Works on AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) The OnePlus 6T can’t match the cameras on the Pixel 3 and Galaxy S10, but it holds its own in other ways. The big benefit is OnePlus’s dedication to bimonthly security updates and quick platform updates. The OnePlus 6T (and older OnePlus phones) got the new Android Pie OS update before most phones. The 6T is also one of the first phones to have an in-display fingerprint sensor, and it works! The 6T is a $550 phone that’s as fast as most any device you can buy. (Note: The OnePlus 6 is also top-notch. It has a more standard fingerprint sensor and a headphone jack.)
Still a Top Buy – Samsung Galaxy S9
PRICE: (#224, 470) $620
(Works on all four major networks) The Galaxy S10 is the newest model, but Samsung’s Galaxy S9 is still a very nice phone. It has one of the faster Qualcomm Snapdragon processors (845) available, and everything else about it is mostly stellar, including the new One UI interface. The software is familiar, the camera is outstanding, the screen is gorgeous, and the rear fingerprint sensor works fine. If you’ve owned Galaxy phones in the past, this is a great upgrade.
Best for Audiophiles – LG G7 ThinQ
PRICE: (#182,000) $500
(Works on all four major networks) If you can overlook the silly “ThinQ” branding and ignore the useless AI camera mode, what LG’s G7 leaves you with is an outstanding phone that matches the Galaxy S9 in many of the ways that matter. It’s not a particularly sexy device, but LG does have some killer audio features, like a standard headphone jack, DTS:X for Bluetooth headphones, an onboard Hi-Fi Quad DAC, and an impressively loud built-in speaker system. It’s also much cheaper now that the LG G8 has been announced. (There’s no need to get the new version unless you absolutely must have the latest and greatest.)
Best Battery Life – Motorola Moto Z3 Play
PRICE: (#145,000) $400
(Works on all four major networks) The Moto Z3 Play doesn’t have a beefed-out spec sheet, but it does come with a secret weapon for long days: a magnetic battery pack. The phone is compatible with Motorola’s Moto Mods, a line of attachments that add new functionality, such as an instant printer, an Alexa speaker, or the Z3’s in-the-box Mod, a battery pack that’ll double your run time to a full two days. The Prime version and Standard version seem to alternate in price—either one is a fine purchase.
Pure Android For Cheap – Nokia 7.1 (2018)
PRICE: (#127,000) $350
Nokia has been impressing us lately. The 7.1 is a simple, very nice mid-market phone that gets direct updates from Google. This makes it one of the only Android phones that will remain updated and secure. It has a reasonably fast midrange processor, dual rear cameras, and 64 GB of storage—a definite step up from the Nokia 6.1. On the downside, it’s only slightly water resistant and you’ll need a case, because the glass back is fragile.
Even Cheaper, Still Good – Nokia 6.1 (2018)
PRICE: (#80,000) $220
(Works on AT&T, T-Mobile) There’s something to be said for a sturdy, affordable phone that does the job. The Nokia 6.1 has a nice metal chassis, a quick enough processor that won’t bog you down, and a usable camera. But it’s one of our favorite cheap phones because of its secret power. Unlike most Android phones (aside from Google’s own Pixel), it gets updates directly from Google. This means it will get the next version of Android some 6 to 24 months before most competing handsets, along with every monthly security patch Google puts out.
Cheapest Good Phone – Motorola Moto G6
PRICE: (#62,000) $170
(Works on all four major networks) The Moto G6 is not a perfect phone, but it just has to work well enough and not annoy the hell out of you. The G6 mostly keeps the pace. The sluggish camera may frustrate you if you try to snap a shot of a fast-moving subject, but the pictures it can take under normal circumstances are surprisingly solid.
Superb Pen – Samsung Galaxy Note 9
PRICE: (#326,000) $900
(Works on all four major networks) As usual, the Galaxy Note 9 is a ginormous Android phone. It’s bigger than big. If that’s your thing, you’ll like the S Pen’s new Bluetooth functionality, which lets you use it to do things like open apps and remotely snap pictures. From Fortnite bouts to email replies, this beefy, brawny phone can handle your most demanding tasks. Given the high price of the Note, we recommend picking up a Galaxy S10 Plus unless the S Pen is on your mind.
