Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central, has weighed in on the power tussle between the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the leadership of the ninth National Assembly.
The National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole had mentioned that his party won’t share the leadership of the next National Assembly with the main opposition.
Oshiomhole, at a dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock and senators-elect, informed the Senators-elect under the party, that Lawan was their choice for the Senate Presidency.
But the Senator representing Borno South District in the National Assembly, Ali Ndume, faulted the decision of Oshiomhole, to adopt Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, as the Senate President of the ninth Assembly.
Ndume, on Tuesday in Abuja, said that the choice of Lawan was an unpopular and unconstitutional decision.
However, reacting to the development, Sani, on his Twitter page, said candidates endorsed by “president and executives hardly win”
Sani said: “Candidates openly endorsed by the executive for legislative positions in the parliament can hardly win if its a secret ballot system adopted for voting.”
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday declared that its elected senators and members of the House of Representatives are constitutionally eligible to seek election into any presiding office of both chambers of the National Assembly.
The former ruling party stated that the position of the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives as well as the Deputy Senate President and the Deputy Speaker are not the “exclusive preserves of any political party, but a constitutional right of every elected lawmaker in both chambers.”
