In an exclusive chat with GATMASH BLOG recently at the launch of Girls Auto Squad (GAS) Auto-Mechanic training workshop in Lagos and Abuja, CEO, Autolady Synergy Coy. Ltd, Joyce Daser Adams, a mechanical engineering graduate with a vast experience in the automobile repairs, sales and services said the initiative is developed by a crop of professionals with a broad spectrum of experience in the automotive engineering, vocational, human management and entrepreneurship sector with the aim of creating a new approach in skill education in Nigeria.
Speaking on challenges faced especially in the northern region to get girl into the workshop, Joyce said: “GAS is strictly for girls that fall under the ages 16-30 that are out of school, disadvantage girls, domestic workers, young mothers and nomadic girls but getting girls from IDP camps to enroll in this training is really challenging. We need the media to help us by creating awareness on why the girl child should be allowed to learn a vocational skill”.
The first female mechanical engineer from Jos, Northern Nigeria, Joyce further states that the training approach will include entrepreneurship, technical and vocational skills and certification.
“Girls Auto Squad Auto-Mechanic training workshop will train girls in basic automobile preventive, maintenance services change like fluids such as engine oil, transmission oil, brake fluid and more, air condition and cooling system checks, brake system, fuel system and fuel injection maintance, ignition and suspension, transmission, differential and driveline, engine management, vehicle detailing, headlight restoration, tire services and comprehensive auto diagnosis.
The selected girls will be supported through education which will also include stationary materials, clothing and medical expense. During the course of the training, the girls will also be taught on driving and will acquire their licenses afterward”.
