The Human Rights Writers Association, HURIWA, has disclosed that the British High Commission in Nigeria has responded to a Save Our Souls (SOS) request it made to the British Government.
HURIWA said it urged the British Government to provide technical assistance to Nigeria as well as mount pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to confront the widening and increasing spectre of bloody and violent kidnappings by armed gangsters and attacks of communities by armed herdsmen/bandits all across the Country.
HURIWA, in a statement signed by its Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, and made available to DAILY POST on Sunday, said the United Kingdom had through Wayne A. White, the administrative Assistant, Private office and Political, British High Commission, Abuja Nigeria, disclosed that it was aware of the widespread insecurity and killings in Nigeria.
The statement added that the British Government said it was doing a lot to provide technical assistance to Nigeria to combat the scourge.
HURIWA had in the letter it sent to the British Government recently, raised alarm that there is now widespread breakdown of law and order occasioned by the activities of dare-devil armed kidnappers all across Nigeria.
In its response, according to HURIWA, the United kingdom wrote: “Dear Comrade Emmanuel. Thank you for your letter dated 27 March 2019.
“We note your concerns, including that of the increased rates of kidnapping.
“Please be assured that the British High Commission will continue to work with the government and people of Nigeria for the development of the country.”
HURIWA said it also wrote to the United States of America; Germany; European Union and Australia.
