Nigerians have reacted to claim by the spokesman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign Council, Festus Keyamo that one does not need a WAEC certificate to become President of Nigeria.
Keyamo said this while appearing on Channels Tv on Sunday night when asked about the eligibility of President Muhammadu Buhari to contest the presidential election.
According to him, if you have occupied the public office for a reasonable length of time, you do not need a WAEC certificate to become president of Nigeria.
This statement has since stirred reactions from the opposition party and many Nigerians on the social media.
Some Nigerians wondered why Buhari does not need WAEC to contest to be a president yet WAEC and NYSC certificate were made mandatory to be a minister or governor.
Here are some comments gathered by DAILY POST from Twitter:
@Nafeezi “WAEC has denied the authenticity of Okoi Obono-Obla’s WAEC certificate but he is still using it to serve under Buhari as special assistant on prosecution. You people are shameless double standard liars.”
@TheLagosbiggifl “Festus Keyamo says you do not need WAEC certificate to become president or governor, that means you can be a governor or president without going through NYSC. So why exactly are we mandated to graduate and do NYSC when you do not need it to become the first citizen?
@AjisafeSeyi “Wow Festud keyamo came out to say you dont need WAEC to become a president..First question why is APC and CO taking Adeleke to the court? We are being ruled by those who turn our law upside down just to suit themselves…We are in for a big thing in this country.”
@Modebolanle “When a Senior Advocate is saying WAEC certificate is irrelevant in the highest position attainable in the Country, what kind of message is he passing across to d youths and mostly secondary school students? These are one of the reasons why our Education sectors may not work again.”
@SamElba “If you know Buhari doesn’t need WAEC certificate to be President, why did you drag Senator Adeleke to Court over WAEC certificate?
@Solomonapenja “If, as it is becoming more apparent, man does not have WAEC, it would be beyond any contestation or disputation that his attaining the rank of General of the Nigerian Army, Head of State and subsequently, President would be the most elaborate fraud ever in the history of Nigeria.”
@FakeyeAhmed “And I was reading like mad to pass my WAEC exam and having sleepless night to pass my courses so as to obtain my Bsc. I ave gotten the Bsc since 2016 and I have nt secured a job, but the highest office holder don’t need WAEC certificate to context. Our constitution is too bad.”
@Nwafor_Strphen “It’s time to cancel WAEC in Nigeria. Since we don’t need it to become president.”
@Ihoterence “I don’t think Buhari needs all these law interpretation if he really has a WAEC certificate. All he needs to do is, present it before the court as presented to @inecnigeria and move on. All these interpretation is just a pointer that is either he doesn’t have it or its forged.”
@Radical189 “In Nigeria,A President doesn’t need to pass WAEC to be President,A governor doesn’t need to pass WAEC to be governor
Whereas,to get a N50K job in Nigeria, you must have WAEC, Bsc & Masters, but to be president, with WAEC or no WAEC you’re good to go.Our Constitution is a fraud.”
@undisputedniyi “It is only in Nigeria that people that don’t have WAEC at all can be president but people that have BSc but don’t have NYSC can’t be president. How did we get here for God’s sake.”
@Daegozaza “Welcome to Nigeria where a Primary School Certificate holder is the president while the Vice President is a SAN, Festus Keyamo = SAN and other ministers are SAN.
No wonder the country is DOOMED! How do you succeed when a primary school certificate holder is leading you?
@Okorocollins “What is the essence of getting a School certificate (WAEC) when you can become the President with a primary school certificate. This our Constitution is an error.”
