President Muhammadu Buhari has maintained that Nigeria’s elites have always been against his political ambition.
Buhari said since he started contesting for presidency, the elites have been against his political ambition.
He stated this during an interview broadcast on Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, on Monday night.
Buhari said they should thank ordinary citizens for making him a leader and, therefore, saving everyone from acute leadership failure.
Buhari lamented that Nigerian elites have always pushed a candidate they believe would be amenable to their political and economic interests.
He said: “They want to impress and they try to dictate the terms for government.
“I contested three times before I won the fourth time. The elite should thank the rest of other Nigerians who voted for me.”
The President also stated that Nigerians supported him massively during the campaign as against the elites.
He said people trooped out to see him on the campaign trail, which means that “the elite had always been in the minority. Nigerians understood me.”
“There is no local government in Nigeria I have never visited between 2003 and now,” Buhari said.
