The Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola, has described corps members as harbingers of National unity and sustainable peace, adding that the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) scheme remains a unifying factor in Nigeria’s nation-state.
The Governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Gboyega Alabi made this known on Thursday, at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Ede, during the official opening and swearing-in ceremony for 2019 BATCH B corps members.
He noted that the Federal Government prioritises youth engagement for the purpose of creating opportunities for young people to contribute their quotas to the development and growth of Nigeria.
“It was self-evident that the National Youth Service Corps and the government beam its light on the youths because they constitute the most productive segment of the population.
“You must complement the gesture of NYSC and the government by being good ambassadors and advocates of peaceful coexistence of our nation”, he said.
Oyetola then promised to work with NYSC to ensure the success of the scheme and urged corps members to abstain from social vices such as drug abuse, advance fee fraud, kidnapping, robbery, cultism, others.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Adegoke Adewale in his remarks disclosed that a total of 2,600 prospective corp members were deployed to the state, comprising 1,430 Male and 1,170 Female.
Adewale, however, urged the state government to help in improving the infrastructural development of the camp and the prompt payment of allowances to corps members, as he implored corp members to see the service year as an opportunity to serve the nation.
