The Rivers State Police Command says it has smashed a kidnappers’ den at a forest in Omerelu, Ikwerre Local government area of the state.
Spokesman of the Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, in a statement, disclosed that operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, stormed the forest in a sting operation Tuesday.
Omoni said on sighting the Police, the hoodlums engaged the police personnel but were repelled and chased farther into the forest with some of them sustaining life-threatening gun shot wounds.
He added that the camp of the kidnappers was dismantled and set ablaze while weapons and ammunition were recovered.
“Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, in a sting operation on 5/7/19, following the attack on motorists along the Omerelu/Owerri Road on 4/7/19 while acting on credible information, stormed a Kidnapper’s Den at a forest in Omerelu.
“Exhibits recovered from them include: One locally made pistol, live Ammunition, one 32inches plasma TV, one generator, one bag of garri, Bank ATM Cards and photographs of the hoodlums.
“Efforts have been intensified to ensure the timely arrest of the fleeing hoodlums. As we strongly appeal to the public to avail us of any information that can lead to their arrest,” the statement read.
