The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on Monday declared that the security situation in the country, especially in the North East has improved because there are no more bomb explosions.
Abubakar made this known while delivering the 2nd Distinguished Personality Lecture of the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies of the University of Ibadan, theme, “Roles of the Nigerian Air Force in Internal Security Operations in Nigeria”.
The air chief while speaking at the lecture which was held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, said that Boko Haram insurgency in the Northwest and Northeast part of the country has been degraded substantially, compare to what we have before where insurgency and terrorism is all over.
He noted that Boko Haram has been caged and can not come out as a force except in some parts of the country, adding that security agencies are fighting them on daily basis to end their insurgency and terrorism in Nigeria.
“Security situation in Nigeria has changed, because insurgency and terrorism has been degraded compare to before where there were bomb explosions everywhere.”
He pointed out that the Nigerian Air Force was participating effectively in the duty operations both in the Northeast and North central, adding his men are providing close air supports to the ground forces through provision of logistics such as supply of harmour, jackboot and medicine to treat the wounded soldiers.
He, however, urged Nigerians to also play their roles by giving support and relevant information to security agencies so that we can have a secure environment.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Idowu Olayinka, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Admin) Professor Kayode Adebowale, noted that the Institute for Peace and Strategic Study was built to harmonized the existing peace and security in the nation, and to bridge the existing gaps between the government and the people both at the local level and internationally.
The VC noted that the Nigerian air force has a very strong research and security network, adding that they should use it to build more security system in the country
He, however, commended the efforts of the Nigerian Air Force to cub the issue of insurgency and other security challenges in Nigeria.
The Director of the institute of Peace and Strategic Study, Professor Tajudeen Akanji noted that the institute was created by the university as one of the strategy to contribute to the societies needs in building a peaceful and peaceable environment for growth and development.
