President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa has confirmed the death of former President, Robert Mugabe.
DAILY POST reports that Mugabe died, aged 95 on Friday morning.
The cause of his death has, however, not been disclosed.
President Emmerson in a statement on his verified Twitter page expressed sadness over the death of Mugabe.
He described Mugabe as an “icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people.”
The statement read “It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe
“Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people.
“His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Recall that Mugabe, the longest serving president of Zimbabwe, was forced to resign in 2017 following protracted intra party crisis.
He was succeeded by his estranged deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
