The Deputy Speaker of Adamawa State House of Assembly and member representing Numan Constituency, Hon Pwamwakaino Mackondo, has urged the Nigeria Police to halt constant attacks and killings around the Numan end of the Numan-Jalingo highway in Numan Local Government Area of the state.
The deputy speaker, in a press statement obtained at the weekend, called attention to an attack last week by suspected armed robbers who killed two people along the road, as well as an attack on Thursday by bandits who shot and wounded seven people.
Hon Pwamwakaino condemned the frequent attacks near the village of Dowaya along the road and asked for proactive measures by the police to curb the trend.
DAILY POST learnt on Sunday that armed robbers last week barricaded the road and robbed businessmen returning from a local market, killing two people and injuring several others.
The bandits were said to have again struck towards the weekend, on Thursday night, when they allegedly barricaded the road and shot seven people, said to be receiving treatment now at an undisclosed hospital in Numan.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, confirmed Sunday afternoon that two people died in the hands of bandits last week, and that some others were wounded on Thursday night.
He, however, faulted the allegation that the bandits barricaded the road, and said five, and not seven people, were wounded in Thursday shootings on the road.
He said in a telephone conversation concerning the Thursday attack: “That particular road is bad and vehicles move slowly. The bandits came out of the bush to shoot at a passing vehicle, wounding five of the passengers and running back into the bush.”
He said the state Police Commissioner, Audu Madaki, has since ordered that police presence be made more visible along the road to stop the appear-and-attack tactics of bandits along the road.
