Residents of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital were in the early hours of Monday, thrown into confusion after a military amour tank caught fire and ammunitions contained in the vehicle exploded.
The incident occurred around August 27th Stadium in the metropolis where troops were stationed for security reason.
The development forced residents within the vicinity to run helter skelter and scamper for their safety.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued shortly after the incident, Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), Special Assistant on Security Matters to Governor Mai Mala Buni, allayed the fears of the public when he said “please be informed that a weapons system malfunction occurred today in one of the military reconnaissance vehicles stationed around the Damaturu Township Stadium this morning.
“The incident was purely an accident and so there is no cause for alarm.
“All residents of the Yobe State Capital are therefore urged to remain calm and continue with their lawful daily activities.”
