North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, on Friday said member countries believe that Iranian missiles downed the Ukrainian airliner that crashed on Wednesday.
176 people on board the Boeing 737-800 were killed.
“It is important that we establish all the facts there…I call on Iran to fully participate and contribute to a transparent and thorough investigation,” Stoltenberg told reporters at extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers.
“We have no reason to not believe the reports we have seen from different NATO allies… that the plane may have been downed by Iranian air defence systems.
“That’s exactly why we need a thorough investigation, to establish all the facts and that’s exactly why we have to have full cooperation from the Iranian side in such an investigation,” he said.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) advised airlines to avoid flights through Iraqi and Iranian airspace.
The European Commission has called for an “independent and credible” civil aviation investigation.
Iranian government spokesman, Ali Rabiei, said representatives from U.S. aerospace giant, Boeing, are also welcome to participate in the probe.
