The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila on Wednesday announced the appointment of all the female members of the House into the constitution amendment committee.
The Speaker announced that all the 11 women who are members of the House will automatically become members of the committee. The Speaker had earlier announced the representatives of the 36 states and the federal capital territory nominated by the state caucuses.
It is unclear if the action by Mr. Gbajabiamila is to balance the lack of females in the names nominated by the states caucuses who nominated only men as representatives of the states.
“All the women in the House, all the female house members will be automatic members of the committee for gender balance,” the speaker announced.
The committee, which is a special ad hoc committee to amend the 1999 constitution is chaired by the deputy speaker, Ahmed Wase and deputized by the House Leader, Hassan Ado Dogwa.
