A non-governmental organisation, Centre for Humanity, C4H, has commended the government of Enugu State for the successful management and discharge of the two COVID-19 cases in the State.
The Group also commended the decision of the Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi administration not to relax during Easter celebration, the precautionary measures it had earlier put in place to prevent the community spread of the virus beyond the two cases imported into the State.
DAILY POST reports that the last of the two recorded cases in the State was discharged on Thursday.
In a statement by its Executive Director, Mrs. Ngozi Ogbu, and made available to newsmen in Enugu on Friday, the Centre, commended the State for its pragmatic approach in setting up the Enugu State Multi-Sectorial Rapid Response Team for Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
“The Centre for Humanity commends the Government of Enugu State for the successful management of the two index COVID-19 cases in the State leading to their discharge on Wednesday and Thursday. This represents zero COVID-19 fatality in the State so far.
“The Centre equally notes with pleasure that COVID-19 has so far *not* spread beyond the two cases imported into the case in March.
“These are clear testimonies to the efficacy of the pragmatic and decisive steps such as the putting in place of Enugu State Multi-Sectorial Rapid Response Team for Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), Isolation Centres, and acquisition of requisite capacities to manage the pandemic.
“C4H is particularly pleased by the containment of the pandemic to the two imported cases. It is encouraging that there is so far no community spread of the Coronavirus in the State and we are impressed by the decisiveness of the Government of Enugu State in ensuring that precautionary measures put in place, such as shutdown of markets, borders, interstate transport, drinking bars and clubs as well as suspension of socio-cultural events and congregational worship by religious groups, stayed in place during the Easter celebrations”, the Centre said.
It, however, added that the discharge of the two index cases, which leaves the state with zero case of COVID-19 did not mean that the danger posed by the pandemic was over for the State.
“But we must add that it is not _Uhuru_ yet as the danger posed by COVID-19 is far from over yet. It is not time to rest on the oars. The State should continue to put its foot down to ensure the full implementation of the precautionary measures. Importantly, this is the time to prevent the importation of new cases into the State, hence the State must man it’s borders in line with existing orders”, it added.
While commending the state, local governments, and public-spirited individuals and organizations for “standing with humanity at these trying times through palliatives and enlightenment”, the Centre also advised the residents of the State not to relent in observing social distance, and other guidelines advised by the National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, in order to contain the pandemic.
