Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have reportedly assassinated an Inspector with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) in Benue State.
Ekunola Gbenga, spokesman to the NSCDC Commandant General, Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, gave the deceased’s name as Joseph Ochogwu.
A statement he signed on Sunday said Ochogwu is of the Idoma tribe from Benue South senatorial zone.
He noted that the Benue Commandant of Corps, Isah Kamilu Ado confirmed the incident during the handing over of over 460 cows belonging to Fulani herdsmen.
The cattle had been impounded by the Livestock Guards for violating the anti-grazing law of the state.
Ado said the Inspector Ochogwu was recently killed in Guma Local Government Area in his line of duty.
The NSCDC chief stated that already, an investigation panel has been set up to unravel the murder.
Ado disclosed that the corpse had been deposited in the mortuary awaiting burial on April 30.
He confirmed that the North Central Zonal Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Danladi Ciroma, was cooperating with the NSCDC to apprehend the perpetrators for prosecution.
On Thursday, an NSCDC operative in Kaduna apprehended a COVID-19 patient as he attempted to flee an Isolation Center.
