Sam Amadi, former Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has condemned Imo government’s handling of some travellers recently nabbed.
They were apprehended for moving into the State despite the ban on Interstate movement.
Amadi stated that the Imo COVID-19 Management Team should have stopped them from leaving after they were tested for coronavirus.
Former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu is the head of the committee.
Amadi wondered how the State government intends to apprehend the travellers whose test samples reportedly returned positive.
On his Facebook page Tuesday night, the Havard-trained lawyer said he was “very angry”.
He wrote: “Prof. Iwu has disappointed me. You intercepted persons on transit through Imo and you took their blood samples and allowed them to continue through the State when you know that interstate travel has been banned across Nigeria. Now they are positive.
“So, how do you find them, isolate and treat them? How do you know that they did not jump down in the State and stayed back? This is shoddy work. Look at how northern states stop movement across their states. Look at how Anambra blocks the Niger Bridge. What is Imo trying to prove?
“Assuming those persons (obviously persons of no specific residence because persons of consequence will not travel 90 in lorry) stopped in Imo, how do you now locate them and stop community transmission? I am afraid that ‘we have been done in’ by this lapse of judgment and failure of enforcement action.”
Imo has recorded 33 cases of coronavirus and zero death.
Last week, an activist in Imo, Emeka Diwe, raised alarm over the smuggling of people into South-East and South-South regions.
Diwe, the National President General of Association of South-East Town Union (ASETU), alerted that Almajiris were conveyed into the States in several trucks with loads of goods.
“Our people should rise up. We already have enough of them loitering. Security agents manning various borders have shown lack of capacity to protect the zones from the health and security crisis. We cannot fold our arms and watch the ugly trend flourish”, he protested.
