The Anambra State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC has inaugurated a 12-man committee to protect workers from being laid off or their salaries being reduced as a result of the harsh economy occasioned by COVID-19.
The NLC chairman in the state, Jerry Nnubia who inaugurated the committee on Thursday said the body would monitor the state government, to ensure that workers were not laid off.
Part of the job of the committee he said would be to engage the government in the event of pay-cuts or retrenchment of workers.
He said, “The Situation Room will serve as an engine room for information dissemination and sensitisation of workers and citizens on COVID-19 reality, prevalence, prevention and containment measures.
“To protect jobs, wages and means of livelihood of Nigerians and serve as a thinktank to liaise and advise the government on strategies going forward.
“To embark on advocacy and social dialogue with government and private sector employers to promote public health and employment/income protection for workers.
“It will also partner with all relevant stakeholders in the state to enable it achieve set objectives.”
Members of the team were drawn from the Nigeria Union Journalists, Trade Union Congress, Civil Society Organisation, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Nigerian Medical Associate, amongst others.
