The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday elected Turkish ambassador to the UN, Volkan Bozkir, as President of the 75th Session.
He will assume office in September when the term of Nigeria’s Tijjani Muhammad-Bande expires.
The Turkish envoy, who was the sole candidate for the position, secured 178 out of 189 valid votes case. There were 11 abstentions.
Bozkir’s name was initially sent for unanimous approval, but several countries requested a vote.
Also, on Wednesday, 18 new members of the Economic and Social Council (ECOC) were elected, NAN reports.
They are Argentina, Austria, Bolivia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Guatemala, Indonesia, Japan, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Mexico, Nigeria, Portugal, Solomon Islands, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.
ECOC is the UN body that addresses economic, environmental and human rights issues.
The UNGA and ECOC elections were held under strict social distancing rules in line with the COVID-19 protocol.
