The Standards Organisation of Nigeria has warned the public against the use of non-approved hand sanitizers to avoid the risk of skin damage.
The regulatory body disclosed this in a statement released via its Twitter account on Monday stating that it will “not tolerate any minus in standards” as quality hand sanitizers are important in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.
According to SON, manufacturers are also advised to get the required standard for their products which will go to the markets.
The statement reads “The Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, has warned manufacturers of hand sanitizers and liquid hand washes, to adhere strictly to global best practices, as a failure to do so would attract penalties.
“The importance of quality hand sanitizers cannot be overemphasized at a time when the world is on a race to find a cure to combat the Coronavirus disease.
“All consumers are being advised to always insist on buying hand sanitizers certified by SON to avoid harmful effects on their skin while also getting value for their hard-earned money.
“Quality hand sanitisers and liquid hand wash are some of the critical tools to battle the virus.
”Handwashing with soap and water is one of the most important steps that can be taken to avoid getting sick and spreading the virus to loved ones.
“Also, we support the manufacturing and importation of essential materials to combat the challenges of COVID-19 through the deployment of 28 relevant international Standards from the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and one from the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) on Alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
“We advise manufacturers to always visit SON to obtain the minimum required standards for the production of goods in the country, as we would only support and encourage genuine businesses in the country.”
