Troops in Damasak, Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State on Thursday repelled attacks by Boko Haram militants who stormed the area at about 2:30 pm.
The battle which lasted for over two hours left a five-year-old, who was hit by stray bullet dead, while a young also hit by a bullet is currently receiving treatment at the hospital in Mobbar.
Some NGO officials who spoke with DAILY POST on phone said they were supposed to have traveled to Maiduguri by air but had to postpone due to the incident as the chopper which was supposed to carry them had to return because of the attack.
Residents of the town also confirmed that the insurgents arrived in about 13 gun trucks and attempted to attack the military location but soldiers reportedly beat them to it as they were seen by residents fleeing in disarray.
“They were shooting in all directions after they were overwhelmed by the military and also shot at residents killing a child and injuring a young man, who is now receiving treatment in the hospital. The child who was hit also died in the hospital”, he said.
Speaking on whether or not there are casualties on either side, a military source in Damasak told DAILY POST that there was no casualty on the side of the military, but that the soldiers killed a number of them (Boko Haram).
Military authorities are yet to speak on the attack.
