The Adamawa State House of Assembly is pushing for reopening of courts to try increasing number of suspects and consequent congestion in police cells across the state.
The assembly on Monday passed a resolution mandating its standing Committee on Judiciary and Justice to liaise with relevant authorities for reopening of court proceedings.
The state Police Commissioner, CP Olubenga Adeyanju, had said in response to a question from newsmen while parading some suspects last week that suspects who should normally be arraigned in court had to be kept in police cells as courts were not in session.
The Adamawa House of Assembly resolution on Monday followed a motion of matter of urgent public importance raised on the floor of the House by the member representing Verre Constituency, Hon Abdullahi Umar Yapak.
Yapak said following recent attacks by the notorious Shila cult group especially around the state capital and its environs, police stations are congested as courts, which should prosecute suspects have remained closed following the COVID19 outbreak.
He prayed the House to order the immediate resumption of court proceedings for justice to take its course.
Contributing to debate, the member representing Demsa Constituency, Kate Raymond Mamuno and her Shelleng Constituency counterpart, Abbakar Isa commended Yapak for raising the motion.
The Deputy Speaker, Pwamwakeno Mackondo of Numan Constituency who presided over the Monday resumed plenary, directed the clerk of the Assembly to communicate the House resolution to relevant authorities for necessary action.
