The crisis rocking the Ogun State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) is far from being over.
This is as the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Ogun state chapter, has asked the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to investigate its officer, Abduljabar Ayelaagbe, who is currently the Chairman of NYCN in the state.
DAILY POST reported that students leaders in Ogun had earlier petitioned the Ogun State Command of the NSCDC, asking it to stop Ayelaagbe from participating in the NYCN election, being an officer of the paramilitary agency.
The students accused the Ogun command of the NSCDC of being partisan, alleging that it is venturing into politics and unionism.
But the NSCDC in Ogun told DAILY POST in an interview that it had nothing to do with youth council election.
Abodunrin maintained that he had started the process and procedure of establishing facts on the issue.
However, at a press conference addressed by NANS, Ogun JCC, in collaboration with the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), in Abeokuta on Sunday, it was gathered that nothing has been done about the issue.
Aside from being an officer of a paramilitary agency, NANS also accused Ayelaagbe of age falsification.
Speaking, the Ogun NANS leader, Tomiwa Bamgbose, reechoed that “the act establishing NSCDC did not allow any of its officers to participate in the activities of any organisation that is partisan in nature like the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).”
Bamgbose said the main objective of the NYCN is to protect and promote the interest of young people in Nigeria at all level of governance and to act as the voice of Nigeriam youths.
He said he wonders, “how a law enforcement officer can act in this capacity without jeopardizing the interest of the young people iy ought to represent.”
He alleged that Ayelaagbe, “falsifies his age, which is a capital offence for lying under oath”, saying “we hereby urge the leadership of NSCDC to investigate him and equally sanction him accordingly.”
DAILY POST reports that Ayelaagbe has since debunked the allegation of age falsification levelled against him.
The student leader stressed that “we are aware of attempts and efforts of some retired and serving senior officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to cover up this matter, but we want to assure them that we will not allow this constitutional abnormality that is capable of denying young people in Ogun State adequate representation in governance and their voices to be heard”, warning them to steer clear.
“As the intellectual component of the youth demograph in Ogun State we will not allow anybody or by extension any organization to denied us adequate representation in governance and deprived the real actors in Ogun State youth constituency fair representation and involvement. We will resist this constitutional aberration in all fronts.
“We hereby once again call on the South West Commandant and the Ogun State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to investigate and sanctions Mr. Ayelaagbe, who lied under oath to falsify his age and his illegal involvement cum activities as the Chairman of the Ogun State Chapter of NYCN, Bamgbose stated.
He called on the Ogun State Commissioner for Youths and Sport, Kehinde Oluwadare, to stop recognising Ayelagbe as the Ogun Chairman of the NYCN.
“Finally, we have resolved to officially submit a detailed petition to this effect to the headquarters of the NSCDC during the week. Failure of the NSCDC headquarters to immediately address this aberration shall be faced with the full wrath of Nigerian Students in Ogun state,” he emphasized.
