Amnesty International (AI) has described the action of the Police Officer in a trending video as a violation of the young woman’s human rights particularly her rights to dignity.
It called on the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to thoroughly investigate the act and ensure that justice is served.
A video trending on social media showing policeman interrogating a 25-year-old lady, who identified herself as Omobola and asking her embarrassing questions about her sex life.
Meanwhile, The IGP has ordered discreet investigations into the circumstances surrounding the dehumanising treatment.
Osai Ojigho, AI Director in Nigeria in a chat with DAILY POST on Thursday, condemned the act adding that there are standard operating procedures for conducting interviews and treatment of those who come in contact with the law.
The human rights lawyer, Osai in her words, said, “The act of the police officer violated the young woman’s human rights particularly her rights to dignity.
“There are standard operating procedures for conducting interviews and treatment of those who come in contact with the law. The IGP should thoroughly investigate this incident and ensure that justice is served.
However, another senior lawyer, Daud Ajetunmobi described the act in the video as illegal.
He said that the law has stipulated how the Police should conduct in interrogation or interview suspect.
According to him,“the Police Officer in the video didn’t follow the law that stimulates how they should investigate a crime or interview a suspect. It is an illegal act. And I am very happy that the IG has ordered for investigation of the matter.”
