The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu on Thursday said Delta State is among the States of the federation with security challenges.
The IGP who was represented by the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Hafiz Inuwa made the assertion during the commissioning/ handover ceremony of the “State Intelligence Bureau, SIB” Office in Warri, Area Command which was built by the Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice, CEPEJ.
“Nigeria is bedevilled with various security challenges ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, human trafficking and rape. He stressed that Delta State is not an exception. This hampers peacebuilding and peaceful coexistence.
According to IGP Adamu,”These challenges can be largely addressed through effective Intelligence generation by the State Intelligence Bureau, SIB. Hence, the importance of this partnership with the Police and in particular the SIB cannot be overemphasized as it is only peaceful and harmonious coexistence between/ among communities that can guarantee meaningful development in the society.
“By extension, Environmental Peacebuilding, which is your core area, tends to examine and advocate environmental protection and cooperation as a factor in creating more peaceful relations. This has helped immensely to curb spillover effects.
“A case at hand is the present Federal Government’s efforts to clean up oil spillage in Ogoni Community in Rivers State, after several years; which is helping to contain and assuage the anger(spillover effect) in the minds of the indigenes.
” Environmental peacebuilding integrates natural resources management in conflict prevention and building resilience among various communities of society. It includes all forms of cooperation on environmental issues/development between distinct social groups, which is aimed at achieving and creating less violent and more peaceful relations among these groups.
“To this end, this project is aptly a demonstration of your mandate to care for those who have the duty to maintain peace and order in the society at all times: thus I should be correct to rather caption this paper as ” Giving Peace to the Peace Givers”.
