The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has berated Governor Dapo Abiodun for abruptly imposing curfew on residents of the State.
The PDP also condemned the decision of the Governor, banning Okada riders and buses from Wednesday till Friday.
DAILY POST reports that Gov Abiodun on Wednesday evening imposed immediate curfew on residents of the state, while banning the operations of Okada riders, commercial buses.
The Governor also said there should be no form of procession or gathering above 20 persons.
Gov Abiodun’s announcement has generated many negative reactions across the State, as many accused him of not giving any reason for what they termed the “emergency curfew”.
Reacting in a statement on Thursday, the Ogun PDP Publicity Secretary, Akinloye Bankole, said the party is perplexed that, “the State government could take such a terrible decision, without due consultations with appropriate quarters.”
Bankole told DAILY POST that in a democratic setting, the government was expected to give a few days notice before announcement of the curfew.
He stated that the State government should note that Nigerians are still recuperating from their individual losses, occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic scourge, saying Ogun State residents are also not left out.
“Due consultations must be made before arriving at a final decision,” he said.
“No doubts, so many people will be affected by the curfew such as intra and inter-state travellers, traders transporting goods and services within and outside the State.
“We also don’t know why Okada riders and bus drivers will be banned by the government. How will they feed themselves if they are not allowed to go about their daily businesses?
“We all, as residents of the Gateway State are partners in democracy, inflicting more hardship on the citizenry is inimical to democratic tenets,” the PDP said.
Meanwhile, the party has congratulated Nigerians on the nation’s 60th Independence anniversary.
“While we take unfettered delight in celebrating with the mass of the people, we are still not unmindful of the agony, the disappointment and the misery which Nigerians have witnessed since the birth of the ruling APC government.
“On occasion as this, once again, the PDP urges the ruling government at the centre and at state levels, especially the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ogun state to come alive by rising responsibly to all its electoral promises made to the people during electioneering period,” Akinloye stated.
