Residents of Abia State, on Monday, staged a peaceful protest in Umuahia, the state capital, demanding a total overhaul of the nations’ security architecture to end police brutality on the citizenry.
The protesters converged at Okpara Square by Club Road, walked through Old Isigate, Umuwaya road, Aba road, Government House and were armed with placards with different inscriptions outlining their demands.
”We are fighting for a new Nigeria”, we will not be silent, reform police now” and stop threatening unarmed citizens with rifles”.
Some top Nigeria celebrities from Abia State, including Nigga Raw, J Martin, Emmanuel Ehumadu and Dauda, participated in the protest to end wanton killings of innocent citizens by the security operatives.
Nigerians had since last week commenced nationwide protests against the killing of the youths by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad(F-SARS).
However, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu had over a week ago, dissolved the police unit after days of protests.
In the same vein, Abia State Government has warned the opposition politicians in the state to steer clear of the ongoing peaceful protests by Nigerian youths to avoid needless violent escalation or loss of life/
The state government said such a protest could be hijacked by hoodlums to unleash mayhem on innocent citizens.
The State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, who issued the warning while addressing newsmen in Umuahia at the weekend assured that the State Government was fully in support of young Nigerians expressing their views through peaceful protests.
“Abia State Government has uncovered plots hatched by a certain politician in the state to hijack the peaceful agitation of #EndSARS protesters and turn it into a political tool to attempt to get what he couldn’t get using the constitutional means that the ballot box is”.
