Passengers in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, are calling out the government of President Muhammadu Buhari over the increasing cost of transportation in the nation’s capital.
According to the passengers, accessing their work and business places have become more challenging than ever.
Recall that the Federal Government recently increased the electricity tariff and pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, from N160 per litre to N170 within a space of one week.
This development has led to an outcry from passengers in the federal capital as they urge the government to save Nigerians.
DAILY POST staff who visited motor parks in Abuja over the weekend observed most of the passengers lamenting the increase in transport fare as well as an increase in the cost of food items.
Others rightly noted that the rise in the prices of food items in the market could not be unconnected with the increase in the pump price of petrol.
One Chidera Obiamaka told DAILY POST that the price of transport has doubled since the hike in fuel price.
According to him, a taxi to Lugbe from Berger which was formerly N100 is now N200.
“We are tired and frustrated with this government. How else do we describe a government that the NLC and other labour groups cannot protest against?
“Buhari’s government is unkind. How do we survive? It will only get worse. The transport fare is too high, I usually take a cab from Lugbe to Berger for N100, but now it’s N200.
“The drivers keep saying the increment is due to fuel price; the government needs to do something about this. It is tough to live in Nigeria now.”
Also, another passenger identified as Damola Ogunsanya who was at Area 1 said the regular cab of N200 to Kubwa before the increase in fuel price is now N300.
He said: “Before the increase in fuel price, my transport to and fro my office was N600, but now it is N800.
“This is so unfair to us, Buhari should pity us. A government that has come only but to hurt the people is of the devil. People are dying. Go to the market with the whole of your salary you can’t buy anything. ”
DAILY POST also observed that in other axes like Berger to Jabi garage, the fare increased by N50.
With festivities approaching, there is the possibility that transport fares to various locations will also be higher, especially as Nigerian prepare to enjoy the holidays with families.
“Well, I laboured hard in my little way to support Buhari’s second term but sincerely, I regret it. This is an anti-people government with policies that can only kill people trying to survive in a harsh country.
“Fuel, electricity, taxes, where do we run to? This government should go,” another passenger simply identified as Abdul said.
