The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev Dr Paulinus Ezeokafor has charged Christians to adhere strictly to the safety protocols prescribed to fight COVID-19, saying the second wave of the pandemic is real.
The charge is coming at a time when the Anambra State government has announced a ban on all night club activities as a way of curtailing the spread of the virus.
Bishop Ezeokafor who spoke to journalists at St Patrick’s Cathedral insisted that God only helps those who help themselves.
“One of the wrong impressions that people give is saying there is nothing like COVID-19. It is a reality that is there, and it is tested and proven. The second wave is coming and I will advise everybody to take precautions and adhere to safety protocols.
“They may be burdensome but we have to do it to be safe. You can not say because you are coming to church, you will not prevent yourself. People can tell you it is the church, and nothing can happen in the church, but I advise for self-preservation. You can not say because you’re in church, you will not wear good clothing against cold weather.”
On whether the church will amend its rules of celebrating masses as a way to beat the second wave, he said it would be determined by the intensity and that the church remains vigilant.
