A peace advocacy group, the Conference of Plateau State Peace Builders’ Network, has commended the military Operation Safe Haven for not retaliating the shooting and wounding of one of its men in Plateau State.
It called on the State Governor, Simon Lalong, the military operation, the police and other security agencies involved in restoring peace in the State to sustain the tempo.
The group, in a statement, particularly thanked Operation Safe Haven for its display of professionalism even when some of its men were attacked in the process of restoring peace during last week’s protest embarked upon by Local Government workers in the State
Local Government workers in the state had embarked on protest over the non implementation of the minimum wage at LGA level.
The group regretted that the soldiers who were called upon to quell the tension that resulted from the protest were rather shot at, resulting in the wounding of a Lance Corporal.
The group’s statement was signed by its national coordinator, Dr Dung Bot and the national secretary, Barr. Mrs Lucy Wuyep, respectively, and made available to DAILY POST.
They commended the military for not responding to the unprovoked attack with force, noting that the situation would have been bloody had the soldiers retaliated.
“Ordinarily, there would have been serious casualty figure because of the unruly behavior of some of the local government workers leading to the shooting of a soldier in the rank of Lance Corporal,” the statement said.
“We applaud Operation Safe Haven for living up to the citizens’ expectations in combating terrorism, banditry, cattle rustling, farmers/ herdsmen conflict, kidnapping, cultism and other social vices up to this moment.
“We wish to specially thank all the officers and men of Operation Safe Haven for the aggressive patrol during the yuletide season which made it crime free. This is the first of its kind after a long while,” they said.
Recall that Civil right groups, Coalition of Civil Rights Group of Nigeria had condemned the shooting and wounding of an Army Lance Corporal attached to Operation Safe Haven at the state secretariat during the protest.
Reports say the soldier was allegedly wounded by gunshots from a crowd during the rally which turned violent.
