Ten out of the 76 samples recently collected for COVID-19 testing in Yobe State have returned positive, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 221 in the state.
This was revealed in a COVID-19 Pandemic Situation Report released by the State Ministry of Health and obtained by DAILY POST in Damaturu on Tuesday.
The report says out of the total samples collected in the 3rd week of January 2021 fifty-two (56) returned negative while the results of the remaining 14 samples are pending.
Although Yobe’s death toll remains at 8, the report also said there was no COVID-19 related mortality recorded for 35 consecutive weeks in the state.
It further explained that the state currently has 14 active confirmed cases with 199 recovered and discharged patients.
According to the epidemiological summary of the report, out of the 221 confirmed cases in the state, “52 cases are from Damaturu, 51 from Nguru, Fika has 29, Bade 25 cases, Potiskum 20, Nangere 17, Karasuwa 6, Tarmuwa 4, three cases each from Gulani, Jakusko with Bursari, Geidam, Fune and Yusufari have 2 cases each while Gujba and Machina have 1 case each”.
The situational report, however, highlighted some challenges disrupting COVID-19 response in the state to include: attacks on hospitals and primary healthcare centres by non-state armed groups, military operations due to insecurity as well as fear of stigmatization leading to non-disclosure and refusal of sample collection among others.
The state government in the report pledged to scale up access to hard-to-reach mobile health services in Geidam and Gujba; scale-up active case searches and sample collection in remote areas; and scale-up COVID-19 sensitization training for critical stakeholders among others.
