A series of sit-ins at the National Arts Council seems to be yielding some positive results.
The National Arts Council says it has so far paid over R37,7-million to creatives.
It is promising to make more payments.
Artists have been fighting against what they say is the mishandling of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme.
NAC Council member Dr Sipho Sithole said: “We are paying now every day.
“By [Friday], we had paid about 239 beneficiaries. We have paid R37.7-million as of today, our commitment is as we pay every day by 31 March, at least.
“Our call to all the applicants because we have reissued, new grant notification letters, 1,130 of them — is for people to return those grant notification letters so that we can then do the contracts. We are happy to say they are coming back fast and furious.
“We have received almost 700 notification letters that’s why the payment is now coming and we’re gonna continue to pay them.”
