The LVMH Prize Announces Its 20 Semi-Finalists for 2021. A growing number of our local designers continue to make waves on the international ramps. The likes of MaXhosa by Laduma, Rich Mnisi, David Tlale and many more have showcased their designers on major Fashion Weeks around the world. Another designer who is without a doubt destined for greater things is Lukhanyo Mdingi.
The East London born designer and has been interested in beauty and fashion since he was 16 years old. He is a graduate of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and a has been a finalist in the Elle Rising Star Design Award. I 2019, Lukhayo was selected to showcase at The New York Fashion Week: Men’s and Women’s Fall/Winter. Lukhanyo is recognized for his sophisticated designs, and he has bee dubbed one of the most promising talents of South African fashion.
His latest collection is a tribute to his friend Nicholas Coutts, who died in 2019, incorporating the late designer’s signature handwoven techniques. Lukhanyo’s star is even shinning brighter in 2021, as he made it as a semi-finalist in this year’s LVHM Prize. The LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers, was launched in 2013, with the aim to enable the emergence of a new generation of designers.
The winners of the LVMH Prize enjoy a one-year mentorship tailored to their needs. Dedicated LVMH teams mentor the winners in numerous fields such as sustainable development, communication, copyright and corporate legal aspects, as well as marketing and the financial management of a brand
In the past, South Africa has had two designers making it to The LVMH PRIZE finals. Thebe Magugu won in 2019, and in 2020, Sindiso Khumalo shared the Prize with other finalists due to showcase being cancelled because of the pandemic. And this year, we are rooting for Lukhanyo, who stands a great chance of bringing the prize home.
