Croco Motors boss jailed for killing pedestrian. Chingwena appeared before magistrate Barbara Mateko charged with culpable homicide and negligent driving after he ran over a pedestrian, Shepherd Mukatira, who died on the spot.
Croco Motors boss Moses Tonderai Chingwena was on Thursday convicted on his own plea for killing a pedestrian in Harare while driving along Poland Road in Gletwin at around 10 pm on 11 July last year.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to four months imprisonment with an option of a $60 000 fine. In sentencing him, the magistrate said Chingwena showed remorse to the family of the deceased after he paid the funeral expenses.
He also paid 10 cows to the family of the deceased as compensation and an additional US$4 000. Said Mateko: The accident occurred at night and this meant there was poor visual sight.
The deceased was also supposed to check if the road was clear. Despite all this, the accused person helped the deceased and this also mitigates the moral blameworthiness of the accused person.
The court noted that the accused person is 60 years old and was a first offender and that he did not waste the court’s time. Caroline Mutimusakwa appeared for the State.
