Taliban fighters have taken over Kabul the capital of Afghanistan, as the country’s President, Ashraf Ghani has left the country for Tajikistan, senior interior ministry official says.
Earlier, the Taliban had said in a statement that they have ordered all their forces not to enter Kabul and they want a “transition process”.
Afghan news media reported that President Ashraf Ghani had left the country on Sunday afternoon.
The United States military stepped up its evacuation of American diplomatic and civilian staff. A core group of American diplomats who had planned to remain at the embassy in Kabul were being moved to a diplomatic facility at the international airport, where they would stay for an unspecified amount of time, according to a senior United States official.
The Taliban also now hold all of Afghanistan’s border crossings amid their offensive across the country, the Associated Press stated. Now, Kabul airport is the only route out of the country.
