Some persons have been burnt to death and properties destroyed in an inferno that erupted after two petrol tankers exploded in a checkpoint-induced accident at Omurelu commumity along the Elele-Owerri Road, Ikwere Local Government Area, Rivers.
According to reports, the fire spread into the community – destroying houses, valuable properties and leaving some residents severely injured with varying degrees of injuries.
An eyewitness stated that the incident occurred when one of the tankers conveying petroleum products was stopped by a petroleum task force operating in that axis.
He alleged that while the task force officials were trying to inspect the tanker, another tanker driver on speed lost control and hit the stationery one at the checkpoint.
The two tankers reportedly fell, spilled their contents on the floor, and burst into flames.
As at the time of filing this report, the number of lives lost in the fire accident is yet to be confirmed.
