The Lagos State Government has said the Eko Excel initiative has improved students’ reading fluency compared to their performance before the scheme was introduced.
The Executive Chairman, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Mr Wahab Alawiye-King, said this in a statement on Tuesday.
Alawiye-King was quoted to have said this while commemorating the 2022 International Day of Education themed ‘Changing course, transforming education.’
He said, “The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24 as the International Day of Education in 2018 to celebrate the role of education for peace and development and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu launched Eko Excel initiative in 2019 to provide quality education and upgrade the skills of teachers through technology.
“The recently released Eko Excel 2020-2021 Endline Fluency and Numeracy Evaluation has shown that pupils are making remarkable progress in oral reading fluency and foundational numeracy compared to their performance before the initiative’s commencement, and this is a challenge to us to improve on our scheme, and we shall do just that so that by the next evaluation.”
A member of LASUBEB, Mr Adebayo Adefuye, said the initiative was aimed at transforming public education in the state.
“We at Eko Excel will not relent until we completely change the course of public education in Lagos State for the better because our goal is a total transformation of public primary education, and we are on course,” he said.
