A Pan-African civil society group, Africans Rising for Justice, Peace and Unity has condemned the coup by the Burkina Faso military.
The group in a statement made available on Wednesday to our correspondent by the Media Outreach Officer, Ann Njagi, said although the coup was symptomatic of the failure of the democratically elected government to deliver the promised development and stability, it was never a solution for peace.
The group’s Co-Coordinator, Muhammed Saidykhan, said, “The people of Burkina Faso are tired of living under the threat of violence and they demand a political leadership that can effectively defend their human right to safe and secure living.
“As a Pan-African movement of the people, Africans Rising fully supports their rights to a peaceful existence and a stable democratic government.”
Meanwhile, the group has called for the release of President Christian Kaboré from house arrest. They also urged the military junta to immediately hand over to civilian rule while adhering to the fundamental rights of all citizens of Burkina Faso.
They also called on diplomatic organisations, Economic Community of West African States; the African Union, as well as international human rights organisations, to ensure the safety of all citizens.
