Magistrate Linda Balogun of the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court, Yaba, has ordered the remand of one of the factional leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Abdulazeez Lawal, aka Kunle Poly, over a clash in the Lagos Island area of the state.
Kunle Poly was ordered to be remanded alongside two others, Prince Idowu Johnson and Agboola Kosoko, in the custody of the Nigeria Police Zonal Monitoring Unit, Zone 2, Onikan, for 30 days.
Our correspondent had reported that two persons lost their lives during the clash last Thursday, which involved factional members of the transport union in Idumota.
The prosecutor, Morufu Animashaun, on Thursday, approached the court with an application to remand the suspects.
Animashaun told the court that the application was to enable the police to conclude their investigation of a case of threat to life and property, violence, cultism, mayhem, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, unlawful possession of firearms, conspiracy and murder.
The prosecutor, who told the court that the application was pursuant to Section 264(1), (2), (3), (4) and (6) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, 2021 (as amended); sections 4 and 10 of the Police Act 2020, and sections 6(c), 35(1)(C)(5) and (7)(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), supported the remand application with an affidavit of 14 paragraphs deposed to by one Inspector Monday Ohion.
Following the argument of the prosecutor, Magistrate Balogun ordered the remand of the suspects.
She said, “I have listened to the submission of the counsel, as well as perused the application for remand and the attached affidavit.
“I found merit in the application and it is accordingly granted. The three defendants are to be remanded in the facility of the Nigeria Police Zonal Monitoring Unit, Zone 2 Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos, for the next 30 days, to enable the police to conclude the investigation.”
