Terrorists on Thursday attacked a military base in Niger, burnt down the camp, and engaged the military in a gun battle for hours.
An influential youth leader in Shiroro Local Government, Sanni Yususf Kokki, made this known in a statement made available to our correspondent on Friday, stating that the heavily armed terrorists carted away a patrol van and food items.
“During the deadly encounter, the terrorists after setting ablaze Allawa Secondary School which is now serving as the military camp also ransacked the armoury, carted away the military patrol van, evacuated foodstuff therein among other things,” he said.
He also stated that the heavily armed terrorists came into the community and focused on the military.
“Confirmed reports coming in from Allawa community, Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State indicate that last night, marauding terrorists heavily armed with assorted sophisticated and dangerous weapons in their large numbers stormed the town and headed straight to the military camp and thereafter ambushed the Joint Security Task Force stationed in the town,” the statement added.
Speaking on the telephone with our correspondent, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Internal Security, Emmanuel Umar, confirmed the attack, saying that there was a gun battle and no casualty recovered.
He, however, stated that the camp was burnt but was as a result of the exchange between the military and the attackers.
