Armed men suspected to be pirates have attacked some fishermen on Brass Island in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
One of the fishermen was said to have been killed while others were injured in the attack which occurred on Monday.
It is believed that there might be more casualties in the attack.
The bandits also took away their victims’ engine boats.
The spokesman of the state police command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, confirming thatone fisherman was killed.
He said the identities of the deceased fisherman and other victims had not been ascertained.
“Yes, one person (fisherman) was killed and others sustained injuries. Their identities are not yet confirmed,” Butswat said.
One Nuru Oriade, who claimed to be one of the survivors of the attack, was quoted to have said that the assailants operated in six speed boats. “We were fishing, dropping our nets this morning when suddenly we saw about five to six speed boats drew close to us and occupants opened fire,” he said.
