The Police on Monday arraigned seven suspected members of secret cult over alleged murder of one Ajibiye Rildwan at Malete in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Those brought before an Ilorin Chief Magistrate Court included Victor Okpara, Zubair Babatunde, Samu Sodiq and four others who were at large.
Police First Information Report revealed that “members of rivalry cult groups, Buccaneers and Eiye engaged in terrible street fight at Tarmac area of Malete, thereby hacking down Rildwan.”
“The teams of policemen drafted to the scene however evacuated the battered body of the Rildwan and deposited it at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital morgue.
“The preliminary investigation conducted led to the arrest of Victor Chimazie Okpara, Zubair Aliyu Babatunde, Samu Sodiq as the killer of the deceased,” the report stated.
The Prosecutor, Moshood Agboola urged the court to order the remand of the suspects adding that since they were being tried for alleged offence of culpable homicide which is not ordinarily bailable.
However, a defence counsel, Barrister Toyin Onaolapo, prayed the court to grant the accused persons bail as they were presumed to be innocent since no court has tried and convict them of the offence.
The trial Magistrate, Mrs Adenike Adeniyi, in her ruling ordered that the accused persons be remanded at the Federal Correctional Center, Mandala, Ilorin.
The case was adjourned till February 24 for further hearing.
