Speaker of Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, has become the longest-serving state assembly speaker in Nigeria after ten years of uninterrupted reign.
He broke the record of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, to become the longest-serving state assembly speaker as of February 9, 2022.
Ikuforiju was sworn in as the Lagos Assembly speaker on December 29, 2005, and left office on July 3, 2015, spending 114 months and five days in office.
On his part, Abdulkarim Lawan emerged as Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly on February 9, 2012, and he is still serving till date – February 9, 2022.
With 120 months spent so far as the Borno speaker, Lawan celebrated his 10 years in the position today – Wednesday.
Ikuforiji
In 2003, he contested the seat of his constituency, Epe constituency I, and was elected, a member of Lagos State House of Assembly. In December 2005, he was elected as speaker of the house under the platform of Alliance for Democracy. He replaced Waheed Jokotola Pelumi, who served between June 2, 2003, and December 29, 2005.
On June 4, 2007, he was re-elected for the second term as speaker of the sixth Assembly. The sixth Assembly was inaugurated on June 4, 2007, and the assembly ran its course till July 4, 2011. The Assembly was unicameral with 40 representatives elected from each constituency of the state. His first Deputy speaker was Mrs. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho later replaced by Bola Badmus-Olujobi.
Again, on July 4, 2011, he was re-elected for the third term as speaker of the seventh Assembly that ran its course till July 3, 2015. His Deputy was Musibau Kolawole Taiwo.
The election of a representative for the eighth Legislative Lagos Assembly was held on April 28, 2015, and Mudashiru Obasa emerged as Speaker of the House.
Lawan
Lawan on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, clocked 10 years in office, having emerged as a speaker on Thursday, February 9, 2012, after the impeachment of Goni Ali Modu, his predecessor.

Over forty-five years ago, Lawan was born to the family of Alhaji Lawan Umar of Guzamala Lawanti ward of Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.
He attended Guzamala Primary School from 1977 to 1982 and obtained leaving school Certificate. He attended the Government Secondary School, Kukawa from 1983 – 1988 and obtained Senior School Certificate.
From 1992 – 1993, he was at the Staff Training Centre, Konduga, and obtained Certificate in Office Practice and Procedure and later University of Maiduguri where he bagged Diploma in Public Administration in 2003, Advance Diploma in Public Administration in 2007, B. Sc Sociology and Anthropology and M. Sc Sociology.
