A 200 Level student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, Ajibola Ayomikun, on Wednesday died after falling into a septic tank in a private hostel on the campus.
A student of the university, who did not want her name in print, said the incident occurred when the deceased stepped on a plank used to cover a damaged concrete cover on a septic tank in a hostel called Bver.
She said, “She wanted to dry her clothes and she stepped on a damaged concrete part of a septic tank covered with a plank.
“The plank broke and she fell into the septic tank. Firemen that came for rescue operation worked for about an hour before she was brought out.”
Confirming the incident, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, in a statement, said “a part two student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Miss Ajibola Ayomikun, has died after she fell into a soak away in Bver, one of the private hostels in the Students Village.
“When the news got to us, we immediately mobilised fire men from the University, Osun State and the OAU Teaching Hospital, who through concerted efforts, got the student out. She was immediately taken to the OAU Teaching Hospitals Complex where she was certified dead.
“The Vice Chancellor, Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede, who led his management team to the scene, sympathised with the students and commiserated with the parents of the deceased.”
