Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Wednesday, flagged off the safe resettlement of no fewer than 619 households who had been internally displaced for more than seven years at Malari village in Konduga Local Government Area of the state.
This was contained in a statement signed by his spokesman, Isa Gusau, and titled, ‘Zulum resettles Malari returnees with N58.5 million cash, food’, on Wednesday.
The statement said the resettlement followed the reconstruction of 803 existing houses, which were destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents during serial attacks about seven years ago, by the state government.
Speaking at the resettlement ceremony, the governor directed the allocation of N100,000 to each of 500 community members whose houses were not part of the 803 houses already rebuilt.
The governor also supported households returning to rebuild homes, which were made of 240 male returnees that will get N20,000 each while 379 female returnees each receive N10,000 with a wrapper
Zulum also announced the distribution of food and non-food items contributed by the North-East Development Commission meant to support all returnees, with each household to get bags of rice, maize, gallons of groundnut oil, mattresses, among others.
The governor, however, commended the NEDC for ceaselessly providing interventions, and pledged to sustain ongoing reconstruction projects towards the safe and dignified resettlements of IDPs and refugees who fled to neighboring countries in the wake of attacks between 2013 to 2014.
