One person was killed when gunmen attacked the Omuobizu clan in Ibaa community, Emuoha Local Government area of Rivers State.
The incident was said to have left the residents in fear of reprisal, as a similar attack took place recently.
Community sources said the attack which occurred on Saturday morning involved a disbanded vigilante group and a newly formed local security outfit in the area.
One of the sources said,” You know this disbanded vigilante group called OSPAC has been factionalised.
“Don’t forget that when the Enuoha local government chairman, Dr. Chidi Lloyd assumed office, he disbanded all vigilante groups in the area.
“He (Dr. Lloyd) later set up a new vigilante group called EMOVIS. What I don’t know is if the split of the disbanded OSPAC is linked to the attack on Saturday. But one person died.”
When contacted, acting spokesperson for Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
Iringe-Koko simply identified the victim’s name as James, though community sources gave the deceased name as Thomson.
“Yes, we are aware. One person died and calm has returned to the area. Though no arrest has been made, an investigation has been launched to find out the immediate and remote causes of the attack,” she stated.
While advising residents of the area to go about their lawful duties, the state police image maker assured that those behind the attack would be fished out and meant to face the law.
