A 29-year-old tank installer and maintenance artisan, identified simply as Ahmed, has lost his life while working on a petrol tank at a filling station along the Offa Garage Road, Ilorin, Kwara State.
The Kwara State Fire Service said the incident happened on Saturday around 7.30pm.
The victim, it was gathered, came from Ibadan, Oyo State, with his boss for the job, but suffocated while they were performing the maintenance work on a faulty petrol tank at the filling station.
However, firemen from the state fire service recovered the body from the tank, which they handed over to his boss, identified as Mr Abdulbasit Oladimeji.
A statement by the Head of Media and Publicity, Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said, “A 29-year-old tank installer/maintainer, Ahmed, was recovered dead from a petrol tank at a popular filling station in Ilorin, capital of Kwara State.
“The terrible incident occurred last night around 7.25pm on No 157, Bovas Filling Station, opposite Adisco Ajase-Ipo Road, Ilorin.
“The victim actually came from Ibadan with his boss for the job. While they were performing the maintenance work inside the petrol tank at the filling station, he suddenly got suffocated and died in the tank.
“Reports say the victim was careless and did not put on the necessary safety gear before he engaged in the work.”
The Director, Kwara State Fire Service, John Falade, urged the public to be safety conscious, adding that workers must endeavour to use safety equipment at all times.
