The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated the second batch of drainage clearing and maintenance equipment to tackle flooding in the state.
The governor, in a statement on Tuesday, said more equipment would be provided in due course.
Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, was quoted to have said this at an event held in Oregun.
He said, “The state government will always be a step ahead in terms of its preparations for the rainy season and the aftermath because of the nature of Lagos as a coastal city. My administration will consciously continue to position the Office of Drainage Services to perform its statutory roles. The equipment will be evenly deployed to every part of Lagos.
“The complaints of non-removal of silts from drains in quick times have been addressed with the new tipping trucks, two loader black hoe model, two floodlights, one low loader trailer, a track loader, four-wheel pickups, five tipper trucks, two light cargo trucks, a low bed horse and a crane truck, all to be used in our fight against flooding in the state.”
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Drainage and Water Resources, Mr Joe Igbokwe, said the government had developed methods to improve the environment.
“The government is aware of its responsibility to evolve strategic methods that will improve the environment and guarantee that the state is flood-free and beautiful for residents and this feat can only be achieved through sustainable cleaning of all drainage channels in the state,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Lekan Shodeinde, said the first batch of equipment were procured in 2019 and had since been put into use while the second batch would be used to complement the existing ones.
