No fewer than five persons, including policemen, were feared killed on Thursday during robbery attacks on some commercial banks in Uromi, headquarters of Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The spokesman of the state police command, Kontongs Bello, confirmed the robbery attacks to our correspondent but did not give details.
Our correspondent learnt that the armed robbers made away with huge sums of money from the affected banks.
A resident of the community, who did not want his name in print, described the attacks as “too coordinated in commando-style and the armed robbers launched the attacks simultaneously. This is novel in this town.”
Other sources in the town said four branches of commercial banks in the town were affected.
“The sporadic shots by the armed robbers caused panic in the town. The robbers came prepared. People are just running helter-skelter,” another source said.
In confirming the attacks, the police spokesman simply said “that’s true sir”, and did not provide further details.
